Community Lactation Specialist Pathway

Location: King County, WA

Open Arms IBCLC Pathway I program to support more lactation skills development within our King County birth workers of color, create more access to IBLCE eligibility and testing, and expand community lactation access.

Whether it is delivering baby supplies to new parents, sorting and organizing donations, or welcoming and assisting community members in selecting items at the Baby Boutique.

Delivery Driver Volunteer
  • Delivery Driver Volunteer
    • Role: Delivering essential items (diapers, wipes, formula, car seats, and produce bags) to clients. 
      • What would volunteering look like? We are currently doing “no contact” deliveries. 
    • Time Commitment: While there is not a set number of hours or days required, we do ask for consistency. Whether you are looking to volunteer weekly, bi-monthly, monthly, or one-time, please only commit to what is within your capacity. 
    • When: Item pick-up Thursdays 9:30 am – 3 pm, deliveries (flexible) 
    • Where: Items are picked up from the Open Arms’ office at El Centro de la Raza, located in Beacon Hill. Current client deliveries extend from Tacoma in the south to Mukilteo in the north. We will work with you to make the route convenient according to where you live. 
    • Requirements: 
      • Compassionate and supportive of Open Arms’ work, mission, and values 
      • Respectful of staff, clients, and other volunteers 
      • Flexible, friendly, and welcoming 
      • Reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, and proof of auto insurance 
      • Background check required 
      • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination 
      • Able to lift and load items (up to 15 lbs)
Resource Pick-up & Baby Boutique Volunteer
  • Role: Open Arms’ Resource Pick-up & Baby Boutique provides free resources for families (baby clothes, lactation supplies, and other essential items). Open Arms’ doulas, providers, staff, and families pick up items at a weekly Resource Pick-Up time slot. Volunteers would support the Family Support Services team by assisting with various tasks (details below). 
  • When: Resource Pick-up Hours: Thursdays 9:30am – 3pm, volunteer shifts flexible within this time frame
  • Where: This is an in-person volunteer opportunity. Volunteers must commit to following Open Arms’ COVID-19 guidelines while volunteering.
  • Tasks:
    • Welcome doulas/providers, Open Arms  staff, and families for baby items and PPE pick-ups
    • Monitor shared Volunteer Phone Line and be available for client needs and provider arrivals
    • Prepare family and provider delivery orders
    • Inventory equipment, PPE, and other items
    • Inspect and sort new donations
    • Utilize the ECLR Ongoing Task List for additional projects
    • Keep Open Arms resource rooms clean, organized, and welcoming
    • Bring items to the person picking up; involves stairs and lifting items (usually less than 15lbs)
    • Practice client confidentiality and not disclose any client information outside of volunteer responsibilities
  • Qualifications:
    • Compassionate and supportive of Open Arms’ work, mission, and values
    • Respectful of staff, visitors, and other volunteers
    • Experience working with a diverse group
    • Flexible, friendly, and welcoming
    • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination and following Open Arms’ COVID-19 guidelines while volunteering
    • Background check required
    • Ability to lift 10-15 lbs
    • Availability during Resource Provider Pick-Up hours (see above)
